White on Black, High-Contrast Portraiture

2018 – Value portrait studies of Tyrien Fixico, a young Hopi man. These drawings were white charcoal and white conté on black paper. The individual triptych sections are 22″ x 30″ (55.9 cm x 76.2 cm) in size. For these portraits, I focused on building up highlights instead of shadows to give these six versions of Tyrien’s face form and texture.
